Inconel 718 is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-chromium blend containing significant quantities of iron, niobium, and molybdenum together with lesser quantities of aluminum and titanium. It fuses resistance to corrosion and high strength with outstanding weldability, as well as resistance to postweld cracking. It is noted that high fluence radiotherapy of this blend structure goes through negligible radiation-induced hardening as well as softening with substantial decrease in ductility (7,11-13). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigations (14,15,16) indicate that superlattice spots diffracted from the c0 and c00 precipitates vanished from the diffraction patterns of the aged Inconel 718 soon after irradiation to a fraction of 1 dpa. The dose-dependent softening was described by the radiation-induced dissolution of the hard precipitates (13-16).
