Leatherman Fuse - More Capable In Comparison To The Low Priced Leatherman Kick But Slimmer And Even Lighter Than The Leatherman Blast
All 3 options bear a strong likeness to one another, and all make use of the same improved tougher elliptical plier head. (In company with the Leatherman Charge and Leatherman Wave).
The pliers on the Leatherman Fuse are identical in width to my previous Leatherman PST, but the pivot area is the considerably wider and tougher. When using the Fuse on quite a few odd jobs around my house, I of the opinion that that this extra width started to get in the way. With a greater wire cutter area too, I feel the revised plier head design is a clear improvement.
If you are more used to the original Leatherman tools, the one thing that is clearcut in connection with the Leatherman Fuse is its handle scales. Plastic grips with rounded edges have been molded in along the sides, leading to the pliers being far more comfortable to hold on to than the original plain steel sides. A number of finger grooves has been added as well, which will help keep the item from sliding when your hands are damp.
Situated in one handle, the Leatherman Fuse packs a set of scissors, a Phillips screwdriver, plus a cap lifter/can opener/wire stripper combo blade. The scissors do the job, but they are a backward step in my opinion. For some reason, Leatherman USA has built them smaller than the first Wave's scissors, with a considerably shorter cutting action. I preferred the previous ones better.
A big improvement though, is the Phillips screwdriver. Unlike those on cheap imports, it has a really well thought out shape to it. It's also most definitely long enough to target recessed screws situated in the battery storage area on my kid's new toys.
The opposite handle has a clip point knife blade together with two flat head screwdrivers, also a nice length.
Talking of long tools, this balde should be labeled the Crocodile Dundee of pocket tool blades, with significantly more reach than that of former multi tools in its sector. What a knife!
But in comparison to its cheaper sibling the Kick, the one additional tool the Fuse has is its scissors. In my view sucks. Why didn't Leatherman leave the pointless lanyard ring off the Fuse, and substituted a high quality diamond file. I regularly us a file, and if I had the choice, would not carry a multi tool without one.
Another important point about the Fuse blades; they all lock. As it has the same rocker switch lock that Leatherman USA initially employed on the Crunch, every tool locks securely into position with a reassuring click. I know, I carried the first PST without locking blades for more than ten years. But it's like power steering on vehicles; as soon as it's an option, it makes no sense to do without. Locking blades are a necessary thing in my view.
