Sarah Baartman "Saartjie" was a famous Khoikhoi female of South Africa. She became popular in the 19th century Europe on account of the freak shows that she was exhibited in. Baartman was displayed around Britain and later in France on account of her "unusual" shape features. She had huge rear end and elongated labia, that is a common characteristic of some Khoisan women. Although Baartman never exposed her latter feature when she was alive but was still wore a snugly fitted garment.

As Baartman was proficient in speaking Dutch, she was questioned before a court. She stated in the courtroom that she was in no restraints and would likely obtain half the profits. Baartman was then sold to a Frenchman who started displaying her in France.
