There are some designs you can opt for. The first and most noticeable is the set up whereby the bed is on the top and underneath is a sofa which pulls out into a double bed. This is realistic and creates a large reading area. If you are still reading with your child this is a great option.

If you child is a little older, reading on their own and has homework, then there is one alternative which leaps out. This is the design in which there is a bed on top and a comfy seat and work area underneath.

With this design the seat will pull out into a single bed, so excellent for either sleepovers, or for simply lounging around reading. The work area is fairly small, but this doesn't appear to be a problem. The configuration means that the futon can be used as an extended work area, if they are referencing books or maps then with a swivel desk chair they can simply spread their materials over the futon and write at the desk.

There is a 3rd option which is just like the set up with a work station, but in this area there is storage rather than a desk. Having a separate desk may look like more practical at first glance. This is an adult way of looking at the setup. Discuss this feature with your kids and you'll probably find that they're not so keen on it. By having drawers and storage space below the top bunk it makes the area underneath less fun. If you intend to maximise your storage area then you might be better of with a mid height bed with storage, rather than a bunk bed with futon?

Which ever bunk bed with futon design you opt for it is critical to discuss it with your kids and to ensure that they are happy. It is also a good idea to invest in some new bedding and accessories to make it that bit more special and personal.
