This indicates that the alignment of the image is similar to the one on the driver's rear view mirror, in which the left side of the image represents the driver's left side if he sits on the driver's seat. This is very important to avoid confusion while backing up.

Another benefit of the reversing camera is the wide-angle lens. This typically gives the image a curved appearance, or a fish eye view. Although it deforms the objects slightly, it does give a wider view of the area behind the vehicle, and can display little obstacles at the periphery, for example a metal post that lies just beyond the bumper's corner, that can potentially damage the car. In addition, the lens is also directed a little downward to improve visibility.

Then there is the LCD screen. These can show all kinds of useful information depending on the model, such as the distance measurement to the nearest object, the view from other cameras installed on the car (one can have several cameras installed for added safety), as well as the infrared data from night vision devices. Some would even have an integrated speaker for giving audio feedback as well.
